What is a fume extraction system?

A fume extraction system captures harmful gases, smoke, and particulate matter at the point of generation — before they enter your workers' breathing zone or escape into the atmosphere. It draws contaminated air through a hood or capture arm, filters it through a media or HEPA-grade filter unit, and either recirculates clean air back into the facility or exhausts it safely outside. Unlike general ventilation, which dilutes fumes across the room, a fume extraction system removes the contaminant at source. This is the approach recommended by ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) and required by most Pollution Control Board standards in India.

Types of fume extraction systems

Centralized fume extraction systems are designed for large facilities with multiple extraction points — welding bays, grinding stations, or process hoods — connected to a single high-capacity filter unit via ductwork. Best suited for plants with 5 or more extraction points.

Portable fume extractors work for smaller operations or mobile welding work. A self-contained unit with a filter and fan can be wheeled to wherever the work is happening. Flowmax's portable units use high-efficiency cartridge filters rated for fine metallic and chemical fumes.

Source capture arms and hoods are the extraction point component — the part positioned near the fume source. We supply articulated extraction arms (typically 2m or 3m reach), slotted hoods, and canopy hoods depending on the process.

How Flowmax designs your system

Every fume extraction system from Flowmax is engineered to your specific process — not a catalogue selection. Here is how we approach it:

We start by identifying the contaminant: the type of fume, particle size, temperature, and volume generated at each source point. This determines the required capture velocity and filtration type.

We then calculate the airflow (in m³/min or CFM) needed at each capture point based on hood geometry and distance from the source. This feeds directly into fan selection.

Filter media is chosen based on dust type and required outlet emission levels. For pharma and fine chemical applications, we use HEPA-grade media. For standard welding fume, high-efficiency synthetic felt bags or cartridge filters are used.

The final system is sized and ducted to ensure each extraction point receives adequate suction even under full load. All designs comply with ACGIH ventilation guidelines and are built to meet CPCB/SPCB emission standards.
